PUB LEAGUE NEWS CENTRAL

UPDATED MAY 10, 2010

Bowling returned, as 20 Pub Leaguers fought it out with a mixture of bowling, trivia and some darts in a close race that finally saw Drew M emerge victorious. This is Drew's first appearance at Pub Night this season, and although we've seen Drew numerous times in the past, this is also his first win! Congratulations Drew. We should also note, looking into the Record Holders, that Drew enters a three-way tie for the highest Bowling score (39) with Jana E and Ron C.

Taking the runner up prize was a tie between Sharron J and Tara M, which the ladies settled in a dart-off, which saw someone win. Ah, beer...

Our last place prize was also a tie, where newcomer Ali S met Jasmine F to fight for rights to our consolation prize, that is the person who tries everything and comes in last - & gets their entry fee back. And the winner was, with 14pts... ah, beer... but it should be noted that these two set a new record in Pub League, beating the previous low score of 16.

The night featured a unique trivia event - timed trivia. Pub Leaguers had 3 minutes to complete their answers - it's interesting to have a drunken mob suddenly silent for a few moments - but Jeff L withstood the pressure and emerged as the night's trivia winner. Jeff gets $10 for his efforts, and also lands in the Record Holders as the only person to win Trivia four times.

UPDATED APRIL 12, 2010

One of the most popular Pub League events returned with a sold out event, as 35 curlers took to the ice at Brampton Curling Club. The winning team was declared after 6 intense games - Dan W, Jeff B, Marilyn B, and last month's winner Sarah H, who is becoming quite accustomed to her position atop the leader board - in fact, she managed to expand her lead to 4 points. And all this while Phil Mickelson won another green jacket, in the "other" sports tournament held that day.

Sandra & Maureen don't come to other Pub League events, so henceforth we're going to include them in every single news update until they snap. Bowling is next, ladies...

 

Sandra K's husband Dan K also doesn't come to other events, and he hates to be in photos. So, Dan, come to a freakin' event other than Curling, and Dear Leader will remove the photo.
Or at least photoshop another head onto this.

The only other event was Trivia, where winner Dan W scored a chunk of his points, with a commanding 10 correct out of 18. It should be noted that 2 Pub Leaguers were enjoying the pub a little too much, as their points vanished when they forgot to put their names on their answer sheets! Oops... hopefully that wasn't a $200 mistake...

Tara M and Heather Wy are stymmied in their plan to thief the MacKinnon Challenge Cup.

Door Prizes went to... no idea, the bar was serving 50 and that's Dear Leader's beer, and he was thirsty. So the winners of the Door Prizes are lost to the sands of time, and 50. But a VERY SPECIAL THANK-YOU goes out to Dave & Heather Wyllie for their contribution of gift cards; to Nancy L & Tara M for providing yummy chili to fuel-up the curlers at half-time; and to Michelle & Doug K for warming us in the morning with coffee and donuts. Also thanks to Da Silva catering for a great job as usual, and to Michelle & Ashley at the Brampton Curling Club for coordinating & herding our drunken asses so effectively.

Also, with too many last minute cancellations, the teams were off, so a special thank-you goes to those Pub Leaguers who sat out a game so that the teams would all fall into place, sacrificing a round of curling, but enjoying frosty beverages and hammering on the glass above the rink, not unlike Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate... anyhow, thanks go to Wes J & Heather W.

UPDATE! Tara remembers who won door prizes: Andrew F, Kristen F, Opal, Wes J. Note that 3 of those people were from one team, one table... interesting. And they were the last-place team, so no crying for them...

Also, we ran a "toonie turkey toss", where for $2 contestants got the chance to throw one rock diagonally across 3 sheets, to land closest to the button... and Nancy L prevailed, coming 4.75" from the centre!! Remarkable and good enough for a bottle of Crown Royal. Tara mentions that Doug K gets an honourable shout-out for his 13 inches. Shawn thinks 4 inches is adequate, and makes a note to keep Tara away from Doug K at the next event.

And Tara P finally made an appearance in the winners circle, with her massive $100 50/50 draw victory. Congrats to Tara P.

UPDATED MARCH 21, 2010

Pub League 2010 starts strong, as we had our largest crowd yet - 28 competitors on the Big Board! We've come a long way since Pub League no1 back in 2007, where we started it all with just 9 people.

The first Pub Night of the 2010 season saw Sarah H walk away with the top prize of the night, thanks to her stellar 35 point showing, and in a manvoever reminiscent of our 2009 champion Casey W, she also claimed the 50/50 draw. Sarah H takes home $150 - congrats! This is Sarah's second win at Pub Night, as she also triumphed in May 2009. Will we see her name on the MacKinnon Challenge Cup at year's end? Stay tuned.

Second place went to veteran Jeff L, who took his $30 and dissappeared into the night.

Our last place award, provided to the person who tries everything but comes in dead last, went to newcomer Joe A, with his respectable 17 points. Joe gets back his entry fee. We should note this award was created in honour of Jessica T, who duly showed up night after night only to finish last every time - however, Jessica T had the best showing of her Pub League career, with a top 8 finish of 27 points. Congrats to Jessica.

And finally, our trivia winner of the evening was Jeff B! Jeff claims $10.

That's one event down! So, moving forward, if you haven't attended yet, and your first event is Curling, you must attend the remaining events to have an equal shot at winning the Cup and the $200 grand prize!

Jason E is very, very excited about Pub League. Particularly the pub part, as he doesn't seem to care the cue ball is at the other end of the table.

It is worth noting that Pub Leaguer Stacy B receives the long distance award, making a 7 minute appearance at Pub Night despite the fact she actually woke up in Calgary.

Stephen wins $50 while Casey W gets back his entry fee... as does Tara P, who was our last place finisher (who tried all events). Yes, Wes J, you were one dart away from glorious dead last...

Bowling!!!! BOWLING!!!!!!

Eighteen Bowlers took to the lanes for glory and excitement and inebriation as eliminations began. It would be a night of laughter, tears, treason, and a 207 point game... read on...

Not unlike Rosa Parks before him, Leo changes the course of history by making an appearance; finally, one of Dear Leader's hockey teammates has appeared at pub night, hence discovering the wonderful world of excitement that the fat guy who never scores and takes excessively long shifts yammers on about constantly in the dressing room.

Last year's champion Jana E finally burst back onto the scene, winning all of her games, throwing four strikes, grabbing one bonus point and setting a new record in trivia - 11 pts - to secure her position as evening winner, for the first time since July 2008. Jana enjoys her $55 prize, along with the $10 trivia winnings.

Despite bringing his A-game, Dear Leader was unable to eek out a win in his head-to-head battle with Jana E in game 3, helping pave the way to her triumphant triumphing.

Pat C, shown here with newcomer Leo D and veteran Dan W, is forced to settle for his runner-up prize despite a solid showing of 37 points. After staring at this photo for 20 minutes, Dear Leader can't think of any witty comments. Hah, funny green wall!!! Funny.

One of the most commanding performances of the evening came from newcomer Spencer L, who spanked his opponents with a ridiculous 207 point game, including six strikes, five of which were in a row! Congrats to Spencer, we hope to see you out again, just not bowling against Dear Leader.

Our Return to the Pub was great fun, as Bring A Buddy Bonus Night was in effect. Eight people took advantage of the 5 bonus points, but remarkably the night's winning performance was accomplished without using these valued bonus points.

Sarah H set some sort of undocumented Pub Night record by steamrolling the evening, dominating in pool, darts, bullseyes, trivia, euchre, throwing 1 dart, drinking, standing, running, jumping, archery and feats of strength, to gather 40 pts and win the evening, despite being in dead-last place league-wide, last month. Sarah H takes home $75. Congrats to her and we'll keep an eye on her going into our bowling night.

Casey W fought a hard battle to take our runner-up prize of $15. In other prizes, Jana E was our trivia winner of the evening, with 8pts correct for a sweet $10, and we refunded the entry fee for our last place finisher, good spirited Nicola J in her debut Pub Night this season. Our 50-50 draw went to newcomer Wayne C, friend of veteran Stacy B. Free beers for getting a bonus throw bullseye went to Jana E and Dear Leader, who was happy to finally win some sort of freakin' prize in the contest that bears his name.

That's right, on Friday May 1st, the following bonus is in effect:

• Publeaguers who attended event 1 or 2, and bring one or more Newcomers to event 3
  
• Newcomers who attend event 3
  
• Season 1 where-are-they-nows, that is, Pub League veterans from 2007-08 who have yet to participate this season.

Newcomers defined as 'persons who have never attended Pub League'. Max 5 bonus pts awarded.

Our first Curling event was the popular ticket in town, as 33 people came out to try their luck, get some exercise, have fun, and get hammered on the glorious ice surface.

The competition was fierce as eight teams fought through a Double Elimination tournament, but it was the winning team BWRB ('Blue, White, Red, Button') who went undefeated to capture the title of PUB LEAGUE CURLING CHAMPIONS 2009. BWRB consisted of veteran Stacy B, with Pub League newcomers Tim B, Shari R, and Jason E. They share a prize of $260.

A member of winning team BWRB was also our Pub League Evening Champion for Event 2, as TIM B triumphed with 42 points. As there were substantial prizes galore, we did not run a separate pot for the Evening Winner, but Tim basks in the glory that he lead the pack. Our TRIVIA LEADER for the evening was DREW M, who sets a new Pub League record with 10 out of 12 answers correct.

Other prizes included the Door Prize (a $25 LCBO gift card to Dan W); the 50/50 draw winner of $75 was Rick D (FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW); and 3 other $25 LCBO gift cards went to newcomers Sean V, Tanya D and veteran Stephen B. Dan W also is named PubLeaguer Who Gaveth A Best Effort, as the person who finished with the lowest score (16) but tried all events.

Pub League is indebted to Nancy L for acquiring prizes and helping behind the scenes with yummy meatballs; Wes J for running the finances of the afternoon while Dear Leader slipped steadily into a state of inebriation; Tara P for providing raffle tickets; Tara M for all kinds of running around, including more meatballs; and veteran Heather S for providing a delicious cake! Also thanks to Da Silva catering, which provided delicious food on time with great presentation at great value, even if they did steal my leftovers afterwards, bastards. Nobody takes food out of Dear Leader's mouth when he's hungover. NOBODY!

A cake that was not only yummy and delicious, but so realistic that inebriated Casey W actually started his third game on it.

And, our mission succeeded, as we raised a bunch of cash (Tara M's working out the exact amount, but it looks great), allowing us to buy a bunch of bedkits for those kids who need it the most .

The first Pub Night of 2009 was a resounding success! A record-setting 22 people turned out for a competition so fierce, that Dear Leader couldn't actually partake, he was so busy updating The Big Board®.

Pub League 2009 now has a 60 point potential, vs last year's 58 point system. Three Pub Leaguers - Jeff B, Tara M and defending champion Jana E - managed a very respectable 35 points to tie for first place, leading to perhaps the most drunken playoff in sporting history. But despite a sideways stagger and the most concentration ever focused on a piece of chalk, Jeff B prevailed, winning the Dart game playoff to secure first place, and a reward of $75. Congratulations to Jeff B.

PubLeague Opening Night Champion Jeff B raises his fists in glory, while defeated Jana E and Tara A hang their heads. They were defeated, yet happy, because they had a lot of fun and know that they'll have even more fun at the next event, Curling, for which you should buy tickets now.

Tara M and Jana E continued onwards until finally Jana E pounded the needlesticks home, securing her runner-up prize of $15. Tara M takes home no coin, merely the satisfaction she took Jana E 15 rounds, not unlike Rocky and Apollo Creed in Rocky I. Which makes me Adrian, I guess, in that scenario. Oops.

A group of happy Pub Leaguers, happy because they had a lot of fun and happy because they know they'll have even more fun at the next event, Curling, for which you should buy tickets now.

Our new awarding of the last place prize - reimbursement of the $10 entry fee, to the Pub Leaguer that tries every event but comes in last place - found a tie, with 23 points, for newcomer Pat C and veteran Tara P. They shared their moment in history with pride and dignity. It should be noted Tara P's companion, newcomer Daniel R, finished with a respectable 27 points while claiming the Trivia Leader prize of $10, for his 8 out of 12 score - a Pub Night record.

In other events, the bonus bulls for free beer were abundant, as Casey W, Rick D, Mike Di, Steve R, Tara M and Stephen B drank the house dry.

And, amongst all this debauchery we did some good in the world - we made a great dent in raising some cash for those kids who need it the most.

Welcome to Pub League 2009! We've planned a fantastic schedule of events, designed to entertain body, mind and soul.

Our first event is a traditional Pub Night on Friday February 27th at the Crown & Anchor Pub. See the entire schedule here.

We've made some exciting changes to last year's events, designed to speed the games up with more emphasis on socializing and getting hammered. The Pool games will no longer be a best-two-out-three system, instead we'll have one game per person each night. And there's a special scavenger hunt now, that will encourage you to mingle and learn about your fellow Pub Leaguers. Also, we're swapping the runner-up prize - the runner-up now gets nothing but the pride of coming oh-so-close. However, the person that gives a solid effort in ALL events, but finishes in last place, gets their admission $ back.
